Underdogs – Daniel

Sunday, September 6: Underdogs

Daniel 6

Life has a way of hitting us hard. Medical crises, unemployment, and trouble with our kids are just some of the ways life can overwhelm us and remind us that we are not in control.

How do we respond to these times? From where does our deliverance come?

This Sunday we are going to be in Daniel 6, looking at the most famous story in that prophet’s life—the time he got tossed into the lions’ den. Daniel’s troubles began when he was promoted to second-in-command over the entire Persian Empire. Some of his direct reports grew jealous of the favor Daniel had with the King, so they sought how they might destroy him. The problem was Daniel was a straight-shooter without any dirt on him. “We shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel,” the satraps concluded, “unless we find it in connection with the law of his God.” (Daniel 6:5 ESV)

So, they set him up. They tricked the king into passing a law that targeted the Jewish people (I feel like we have been here before), and Daniel found himself on the wrong end of a frame job. Ironically, the king was far more concerned for Daniel’s safety than the prophet himself was. In fact, Daniel doesn’t say a word about his predicament. As the executioners roll the stone over the lions’ den, the last words Daniel hears are those of King Darius: “May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!” (Daniel 6:16 ESV)

Life hits us hard.

If you grew up in Sunday school, you know how the story ends. If you didn’t, I don’t want to spoil it for you! Needless to say, Daniel’s God “is the living God, enduring forever; his kingdom shall never be destroyed, and his dominion shall be to the end.” (Daniel 6:26 ESV)
