Find God. Be a Friend. Make a Difference.

I am with you – John 15:18-16:4

It’s election season.

Oh boy.

We’ve just emerged from the Iowa caucuses and the campaigns are heating up. The contenders are separating themselves from the rest of the pack, and the rhetoric is getting turned up to 11. Promises are being made. Visions are being cast. Mud is being slung.

What does Jesus think about all of this? Further, what are we to do with all of this?

This week we are going to continue our sermon series on the Upper Room Discourse by looking at John 15:18–16:4. In it, Jesus reminds us of the world’s hatred for him and warns us that we should expect the same. Jesus was political in the sense that he cared about the things of the world and He called himself a king. But He also insisted that his kingdom was “not of this world.” He refused to play by the rules of Rome and the rules of the Jewish establishment.

It cost him his life. He told us that we should expect nothing less.

This week we are going to talk about the kingdom of God and the kingdoms of the world. SPOILER ALERT: we don’t have to be afraid. Regardless of who is in the White House, Jesus is on the throne and we have hope.
