Last week in the book of Ruth, we turned a corner. The story starts off with a famine, departure, and death. Then it becomes the story of two impoverished widows, Naomi and Ruth, crossing the border into Bethlehem from Moab with only the clothes on their backs. The story turns a corner when they just happen to arrive at the beginning of the barley harvest. What are the chances? Pretty good when God is involved. Here is where the love story of Ruth begins to heat up. Ruth, the poor, single, immigrant gal who loves God, just happens to pick the field of Boaz, the rich, single, Hebrew guy who loves God. And Boaz just happens to ride out to check on the harvest, when she just happens to be working. It turns out that Boaz knows everything about her and treats her with loving kindness, reflecting God’s character. He provides, protects, and defends her. He’s tender, gentle, and generous. He prays for her. Then he becomes the answer to his own prayer, which becomes like a miracle to Ruth. Now, when you meet a woman and like her, what’s the next step?
