There are certain phrases that Christians use, or the Bible refers to, that can bring confusion or misunderstanding. One that comes up quite a bit in the Bible is “fear of the Lord.” An interesting phrase, isn’t it?
When you think of ‘fear of the Lord,” you may think of a holy and powerful God who can judge with total justice and fairness. Maybe you think of having a sacred reverence for the Creator. Or, maybe you think of a hard, dictator-type of character that is unloving.
Our goal this Sunday is to glean from the scriptures what “fear of the Lord” means. How did people in the Bible live when they had a fear of the Lord? How does the Bible describe a life lived as the result of having a fear of the Lord? I believe regaining that understanding will help us live for Jesus in a fresh way, amid a culture that doesn’t know God, let alone fear Him.
As we sit together under the Word, let us remember Psalm 34:11, which says, “Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.” Let’s join together and sit under King David’s and the whole of scripture’s teaching.
