Joseph – Genesis 37:1–11

Sunday, January 7: Joseph

Genesis 37:1–11

Then his brothers said to him, “Are you actually going to reign over us?
Or are you really going to rule over us?”
So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.Genesis 37:8

A lot of people are familiar with Joseph but for a lot of folks it’s the flannel graph version of his life. There’s the cool technicolored dream coat adaptation but the full story is not like the one you heard about in Sunday school or saw in a Broadway musical. The whole story is about a family that takes the fun out of dysfunctional. There is all kinds of intrigue, treachery and deceit. There’s hatred, betrayal and sexual harassment – not to mention a pit, a prison and chains. But along the way it’s also the story of a man who decides to focus on one thing when everything is taken from him.

If you grew up in church you know the story ends well but if you haven’t read it in a while you’re in for a ride. Fasten your seat belt. See you on Sunday.
