Why do we look in a mirror first thing in the morning? It’s because when we wake up, our face often looks like cold mashed potatoes (at least mine does). It’s because we know we have some repair work to do after a long night’s sleep. We wipe the sleep from our eyes, brush the scum off our teeth, and comb the rat’s nest out of our hair – if we have any. We remove razor stubble and paint on a new face with make-up – but hopefully not both. Mirrors allow us to fix up our face, and while some faces might need a little more fixing than others, we look in a mirror to do what? To see ourselves as we truly are and to make changes. That’s what James says the Bible is like. God’s word is like a mirror that reveals where we need work. It shows us what needs to change and helps us make the necessary corrections. He also warns us not to be like a person who looks in a mirror, sees what’s wrong, and walks away without making changes. It would be like finding spinach in your teeth or a piece of rice on your lip and not doing anything about it. How ridiculous is that? How much more so, if we ignore what God shows us needs to change, changes that are for our good and for His glory? This week, along with that analogy, James holds up a mirror for us to see ourselves as we really are: in some important areas of our faith as followers of Jesus.
