Find God. Be a Friend. Make a Difference.
Three generations of hands

Abide 1 John 5:13-21

1 John 5:13–21

In families, consistent values are passed down from generation to generation. That’s part of what it means to be a part of a family. However, each generation has to make the family name their own. Sometimes, children are not exactly like their parents (and sometimes grandkids are). In families, there is both differentiation from and solidarity with the generations that have come before.

Well, the same is true of faith. Christianity is an old faith. People have been following Jesus for thousands of years, but times change and following Jesus can’t look the same in every generation. Jesus is always on the move, the Spirit is always at work, and faith won’t always look the same.

At the same time, there are some things that don’t change, and we have been called to abide in these things. This week we are going to finish our Abide series by exploring 1 John 5:13–21. John finishes his pastoral work on abiding in what we have heard from the beginning with a simple exhortation: “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” What we believe about Jesus is important. Anything other than the Truth is an idol.

Join us this week as we remind ourselves of the things that we have heard from the beginning and conclude our Abide series. See you then!
