Trials and Wisdom
In James 1 we dive right into what a Living Faith looks like. As we continue the autopsy on our hearts, this week’s passage shows the world how a Living Faith works, even in the hardest of times.
Often, we seem to be under a microscope and everyone is watching how we respond to the trials in our lives. Do we actually have joy? Are we able to persevere? Will God give us wisdom to make the right decisions? Do I feel like I even deserve God-given wisdom, or is it only reserved for better Christians than me?
This past weekend, I wanted to watch a football game that was streaming on a subscription service we happen to have. I was actually pretty excited about this prospect, because I don’t watch as much football as I used to! I texted my wife to be sure we had the subscription, got the log in email/password, and was ready. But, when I finally clicked on the game I wanted to watch…I was rejected! Apparently, the game was only available to ‘premium subscribers’.
What? I am a subscriber! Why do I need to be a premium subscriber to get certain benefits?
Sometimes, people think God is like a streaming platform. Yeah, you can watch some of the shows…but only premium subscribers have access to the best ones. Yeah, you can be saved…but only premium Christians get the full benefits of a life with Jesus.
Thankfully, this is not the way God works.
One thing is clear from this passage: we all will go through trials. It is also clear that wisdom from above is available to all. God is with all who struggle, and He offers his wisdom to all who ask. He gives wisdom without reproach!
There is no such thing as a premium Christian.
This truth is one of the reasons, although it may sound crazy, that it is possible for us to actually have JOY in trials.
