Sunday, September 27: Follow Me
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34 ESV)
What does that mean to you?
This week we are returning to the Gospel of Mark in a series called Follow Me. In the first eight chapters of Mark, Jesus’ disciples are riddled with the question: Who is this man? Some said Elijah. Some said John the Baptist. Others said one of the prophets. None of these were the full picture. Finally, in chapter 8, the disciples finally understood who He really is: the Christ, the Son of God.
In Mark 8:31–9:1, right after he revealed his identity to his disciples, Jesus drops a bombshell on them—He was going to Jerusalem to be rejected and killed, and after that to rise again.
Minds blown again.
The world didn’t have a category for a suffering Son of God. To them, the Son of God was a winner. Winners don’t get crucified.
Jesus turned all of that on its head. True winning is about pouring ourselves out. It’s about picking up our cross and following the One who has the power over life and death. It’s about surrendering all, but gaining what we didn’t even know we lacked. It’s about life.
Join us this week as we start our new sermon series on Mark 9–16 and learn what it looks like to follow the Son of God.
See you then!
