Habakkuk 2: 1-4

This unique Old Testament book is like a mine full of rich ore. As we dig deeper in Habakkuk we come away with beautiful applications. But like mining, reading a historical document takes time and effort! We may have learned more about ancient 6th Century BC dominant world powers than we expected to, but we have also seen a unique relationship between God and man.

This three-chapter prayer conversation is a glimpse into how God works.

We have read Habakkuk’s cry to God about the injustice in the world. We have also seen God’s response, which was that he would judge the nation. This was a shock to Habakkuk! He wasn’t shocked that God would judge Judea/Israel, but that God was going to use a more sinful superpower nation to do it.

In short, we see the conversation go something like this:

Habakkuk: Why is there so much evil in the world God? How can you let this happen?

God: I have seen the evil; I will judge it. I will send the Babylonians.

Wait…what?

We pick up the second chapter with the ‘wait, what?’ of Habakkuk.

After challenging God’s plan, Habakkuk is willing to wait and see what will happen with God’s response. These four verses are so packed with gold that we could probably spend two sermons learning about all that is here and applying it to our lives. A verse I keep coming back to in my studies is about how God is not slow with his promises…but He is patient with us. In a world where we want instant answers, God is still working when we don’t see immediate results. The question for us is ‘Do we trust His plan?
