Christ At The Crossroads - Identity

I've been experimenting with some new styles this week.

I cut my hair to look like it did 15 years ago. I grew a beard, then made it into a goatee, then made it into a handlebar mustache. The mustache remains, but the handlebars are gone. I wore a t-shirt to preach in. I even tried the preppy look.

It used to be so easy to change how I presented myself to the world. Now it feels a bit harder, or even silly. Now, I just want to be me.

But who am I? At the root of this question is identity. Not how I identify. Not what group I want to identify with. But what is my identity?

Humans can struggle with this. Do we find our identity through our experiences? Married. Divorced. Single. Widow. Parent. Grandparent. Student. College grad. College dropout. Are we red or blue? The world wants a box to put us in.  Are those boxes and definitions our identity?

When Jesus came to the crossroad of "who am I?", he had confidence. He knew exactly who He was, even when people tried to put him into a category. Which, by the way, people are still trying to do today. Jesus handled this crossroad with ease, and He gives us the same tools! We can be confident in our identity because it is rooted in something more than what has happened to us, more than what we have done, or who we identify with. So much more.
