New High School Director - Sklyer Koontz

Welcome Skyler Koontz!

We're thrilled that God has called Skyler and his wife, Alycia, to come to Gig Harbor! Skyler joined our staff on September 1 as our High School Director, leading our ministry to students, parents, and volunteers.

Skyler graduated from Lancaster Bible College with a double major, earning bachelor’s degrees in Biblical Studies and Pastoral Ministries.

Since 2021, he has served on staff as a Youth Director at a church in Lancaster, overseeing the middle school and high school ministries.

Skyler and Alycia felt called to pursue ministry in the Northwest—to be closer to family and to shine bright for Jesus in the PNW.

Johnny was drawn to Skyler’s balanced approach to ministry. He cares about evangelism AND discipleship, and he loves the model of ministry we have tried to instill here at BF: that parents are the primary spiritual influencers in their kids’ lives.

Because we have talked so much about our Lead Pastor search, it may have been overlooked by some that we were also looking for a High School Director. Rest assured, this was not a rushed process!

In the fall of 2024, we formed a youth search committee to explore hiring residents and, eventually, a full-time staff member. The search committee includes elders, parents, staff, and mentors. The Youth Search Committee members were: Tim Owen, Heidi Kempston, Brooke and Johnny Pearson, Steve and Amy Roddy, Megan and Joe Albrecht, Mike Mongeau, Dick and Bo Teodoro, and Hilary Nelson. 

We had a great run with two fabulous residents, Cisco Flores and Junior Flores. When their residencies ended, we knew we wanted to find our next staff member. After a few months of searching and fewer candidates than we had hoped for, Skyler officially applied for the position in January 2026.

After months of initial interviews, reference calls, and background checks, we flew Skyler and Alycia out in May for a formal interview. He met with elders, parents, mentors, and staff, and we all found his passion for ministry and desire to serve infectious.

Through much prayer and a unanimous vote, our search committee recommended Skyler for the position. The elders approved the recommendation, and Skyler accepted!

But…he wanted to finish well where he was serving. That meant completing the international mission trip he had been planning that summer and finalizing the next steps for his departure.

In the meantime, Skyler was able to join us for High School Camp and begin connecting with our students before officially starting in September.
